About
a month ago I began the process of volunteering with Girls On The Run. I spoke with the executive director of Girls
On The Run, Amy Reginar a few times and she encouraged me to go to the coach
training session on January 18th.
I was very excited that I had found out about the training just in
time. I participated in Girls On The Run
when I was in Elementary school and couldn’t wait to give back to such an
amazing organization. The training session was about 5 hours long. During this time we learned about the
background of GOTR, the plans for the spring session, and so much more. We went to different stations and learned
about things like Stretching, making healthy snacks, and teamwork. It was a lot of fun and very informative, not
only for GOTR, but also for life in general.
During the training session I also found out where I would be placed as
an assistant coach. I will be working
with middle school students from North Buncombe middle school during the spring
session of GOTR starting February 23rd. Because of the snow we had to push back the
start date a week because we were not able to collect all of the registration
sheets due to classes being canceled. I have had not trouble getting in contact with
my head coach and fellow assistant coaches as well as Amy. I have been corresponding with Amy about a
few other things, not having to due with coaching in particular.
Getting
back in contact with Girls On The Run has given me an even bigger will to start
service learning. Speaking with Amy and
going to the training session reminded me how much I love GOTR and everything
the organization stands for. I have
already started trying to figure out ways to do other fundraising on campus for
GOTR. I hope to possibly work with the
Girls On The Run on business side of things as well and learn more about
running a nonprofit. I have never really
thought of working for a non-profit as a business career, but I think it would
be very interesting and beneficial experience.
Currently I am trying to figure out a way to get a “Run- A- Thon”
started here on campus. It is a big
undertaking and I am having trouble finding a club that feels they would be
able to take it on, but I am also really excited to see where it goes.
Overall I have really enjoyed
working with Girls On The Run and I can’t wait to get more involved and
especially to work with the girls next week! I am so glad I chose to work with
Girls On The Run!
